Light The Night For Kids..
posted (March 18, 2014)
On Friday night we showed you a brief snippet of the "Light The Night for Kids" - a mesmerizing march across the city in support of the Inspiration Center. The walk with glow sticks and glow bracelets like these ones, and glow in the dark shirts was a fundraiser where 500 registrants paid a 35 dollar registration for adults or 20 dollars for children. The street lights in the downtown area were actually turned off by BEL to make the glow show. Jim Scott explained the idea behind the novel fundraiser:

Jim Scott, Organizer - "Light The Night"
"But it was kind of a mix of the way we use to jump up in the days before carnival and so forth but we really had a true family focus and we just threw in a little creative twist with the glow in the dark t-shirts, the glow sticks and some of the other light up paraphernalia that we had out there and of course the paradigm was having an event like that at night."

"When our committee first approached the Special Envoy and the First Lady and we pitched the idea to her, we thought of all the different themes of light in the night, how many children are not afraid of the dark; if it's not "tata duende" its they are afraid to go down a certain street because maybe somebody would hurt them. The other idea was just having a family oriented event in an evening time on a Friday. The entertainment element was huge in this, let's do something that might be a little non-traditional from the fundraising sense - let's entertain people and let's give people an alternative event that they can count on on that full moon during the dry season every year, but something that didn't involve alcohol, something that was just fun and creative and different. There were a lot of themes and of course ultimately our goal as a fundraiser was to really help the Inspiration Center take another step with finishing up with what they are doing right now and hopefully have an event that could be annual. I think we are going to double the numbers next year. I think your coverage and other coverage that took place - it's going to be a bona fide something to look forward to event."

And to give them some momentum going forward, we close tonight with some images of the novel march where the lighting in the street was subdued to bring out the full glow effect.

We leave you with that. Have a great evening, and join me back here tomorrow.
