posted (March 21, 2014)
And while citrus farmers have to contend with citrus greening, fisherfolk have a whole host of issues that are threatening their livelihoods. First, there's overfishing, then there's climate change, then there are those pirates looking for drugs on the high seas.

That's why the Belize Fishermen Cooperative Association had a training workshop today at their Belize City office. The Chairman told us what the fishers were there to learn:...

Pedro Alvarez, Chairman - BFCA
"We see it necessary because as the time goes along with the fishing industry we need to educate our members more about what happen in the fishing sector. We have first time climate changes which is a great impact in the industry right now."

Jules Vasquez
"How hard is it to get fisher folk into a meeting like this or into training sessions when we know that the fisherman, so to speak, is a lone individual usually?"

Pedro Alvarez, Chairman - BFCA
"I have been a fisherman for the past 40 plus years, so I know these guys and I try to put them and try to show them that it is very necessary to come into a meeting that you can learn especially now in the challenging times that we are facing almost every day that new challenges comes to the fishing sector. We as leaders, we have to be there always communicating with these fisher folks, with our members."

The workshop is funded by the Community Management of Protected Areas Conservation Programme (COMPACT). The will also learned about Basic Outboard Engine Repair and Basic First Aid.
