Bail For Cop Accused Of Gun Theft
posted (May 23, 2014)
3 weeks ago, we told you about Police Constable Yannick Wade who was charged with stealing 8 guns and 100 rounds of ammunition from the San Pedro Police Station. The guns were put there by the KBH Security Company for safe keeping. Well, tonight, Wade is out of bail, and he is with his family.

The change of fate came today when his attorney, Audrey Matura-Shepherd, applied to the Supreme Court and managed to convince the sitting judge that he deserves it. Today, she outlined her argument for the press:

Audrey Matura Shepherd, attorney
"He received bail and that very good news for him and for his family because his wife is pregnant and her due date is this Sunday, so one of the things that we really pushed for is to have out to witness the birth of his second child and to be with his wife. What a lot of people don't know was that the very weekend that he was arrested, the following weekend they would have gotten married. They had all their wedding preparations in place because one of the things they wanted is to be marred before the child is born, but you know that will still be possible. The good thing is that e is out. On the downside however is that it's almost three weeks since the rest of his family was detained; that is his wife, sister, mother, father and at that time the police took away their property, their cellphones, 5 cellphones and we have not been able to get them returned. I have called the officer in charge of CIB to make a complain, he said he will look into it, I have called Mr. Grinage who us is the key investigating officer in this case, he says yes he will follow it up. I have all the texts to show. I have called Mr. Broaster who was the one who personally took the items because the other two officers only should know about it and still nothing. We've gone to internal affairs to make the complaint, but it cannot be that police feels that they can take your property and not account for it."

Wade is facing 9 counts of theft, 2 counts of keeping unlicensed firearm, and 2 counts of keeping unlicensed ammunition. He must return to court on June 25.

Interestingly, San Pedro Police suspect that one of the stolen guns has caused a crime to take place on the island. An armed thief supposedly tried to rob the Bowen and Bowen Branch out on the island because he knew that the KBH security guards were unarmed because of the theft. Luckily, the guards managed to deter the crime without incident or injury, although shots were fired.
