Man Found Dead In Cayo District, Murder Suspected
posted (May 29, 2014)
Tonight, San Ignacio police continue to investigate the death of a man who was found yesterday evening in Los Tambos Village in the Cayo District. At this time, they don't know if it is murder, or if the man died of natural causes.

28 year-old Honduran Oscar Armando Gomez Alvarez was found dead inside his room on a farm. The problem is that there was no evidence that was found that his death could have been caused by violence. The only signs police found were several chop wounds all over his face and, left shoulder, and what's even more perplexing is that he got those in a fight 10 days ago.

He was treated at the Western Regional Hospital, and he was released, so police are trying to determine if those wounds ended up claiming his life after such a long time later.

Today, the Deputy Commander of San Ignacio Police told us about what they know so far:

Inspector Reymundo Reyes - Deputy OC
"Yesterday after 5pm as a result of information received San Ignacio police visited a house at a farm about 1 mile outskirts of Los Tambos Village where the lifeless body of a male person was found lying on his bed in a face up position. What we observed at the time is that the person had several chop wound injuries on his head, face and left side of his shoulder. Based of the investigation that we have conducted is that this person was involved in a fight on the 18th May where he sustained such injuries and as a result he was transported to the Western Regional Hospital where he was treated and admitted for two days being the 18th and 19th and then released from the hospital."

"At this moment we cannot say whether the cause of death is as a result of the injuries that he sustained on the 18th until when the post-mortem examination is conducted. The injuries appeared - superficially they look dry, but we do not know what the internal circumstances of the injury is whether this person was attending because every day he should have attended clinic for dressing, but whether he was doing that we do not know. We understand that even though with this injuries this person was still doing some work around the area instead of maybe bedridden and so forth."

Police are having a bit of trouble finding out if Oscar Alvarez is in Belize legally because they didn't find any immigration documents at his house. They also know that he just recently started staying at the farm in Los Tambos. The owners told investigators that 2 days after he was released from the Western Regional Hospital for those chop wounds, he begged them for lodging at the room, where he was found.

Police also found out that he got those injuries from a fight just outside of the village, and the man they believe inflicted the injuries is a Honduran National who they are also seeking at this time.

The post-mortem on Alvarez's body was conducted late this evening, and so the results haven't been released as yet. Nevertheless, police are treating it as a murder investigation.
