Upgrading Earthen Streets
posted (May 30, 2014)
We know all about those cement streets in Belize City - but with central Government putting in another 10 million dollars for the last tranche of streets, it can't all go through City Hall, some of those allocations have to go through UDP area representatives - who want to show their constituents that they're doing something.

Today we came across two ministers working on the very terrible Ordonez Street in the Lake Independence area. They are bringing that and other earthen streets up to just below paving standard. The means putting in drains, and even moving a house that was on the street.

Anthony Boots Martinez told us more:..

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"The Prime Minister had set aside funding for we called it 'Earthen Street Upgrade." The upgrading of Earthen properly done in corporation with the Ministry of Works, Belize City Council and the area representative."

Hon. Mark King
"What we've decide to do is overhaul the entire street, rip up all the drains and put proper drains and culverts for everybody and driveway so that people can drive in their car and all of the people in this are very happy that this street is being fixed. This will eventually almost be like a paved street just that it won't have the tar in top, but it will be very smooth by the time it is done with all the drainage on the sides. These are all Earthen Streets, they go up to pave standard and they are compacted, the drains are done properly and at the end of the day it's just in time for the rains."

Hon. Anthony "Boots" Martinez
"Our fight is against the rain that is coming. So all speed in regards in getting these project for the residence of Port Loyola and by extension the City is the fight of not one of politics, it's one of the rainy season coming and it is well appreciated by people in the area. There is still need for more, so I think we may need to go to the negotiating table a month from now in regards to need for more. At least in my humble opinion the basic infrastructure where people can come in and out freely without interruption of the big holes and drains and so forth."

The programme is being carried out in Collet, Lake Independence, Port Loyola, Queens Square and a part of Pickstock.
