The Master of Coin Settles His Debt With Denys B.
posted (June 2, 2014)
Last week Wednesday, Burrell Boom resident Trevor Vernon got a stern come uppance when the court bailiff showed up at his house to start marking items which the court would claim to settle his debt to Denys Barrow. That arose from a Supreme Court case which Vernon lost, where he alleged that Castro violated the Cabinet code of conduct. Denys Barrow was Castro's attorney - and so Vernon had to pay his five thousand dollar cost.

He famously went to pay half in coins last week Tuesday. Barrow shot back by getting a writ of execution and marking Vernon's private property as chattels of the court. So, faced with the very real prospect of losing all his stuff, Vernon went to pay the rest of the debt today. The media was at Barrow's office when he did:..

Trevor Vernon
"I brought in the balance of the thing in my duty free tax free bag because that's the statement today, but they are paid on full $5,000. I am sure some technicality will be found to say that I owe another five because that's how these people are I guess."

Jules Vasquez
"Yes, but sir in what denominations did you pay? How did you pay? With what instrument?"

Trevor Vernon
"I mostly pay in fifty's and US dollar bills and some coins, but it was only a couple 3-4 dollars in coins. Most of it was in $50 bills. I hope when I see him riding his bike in the morning and I am jogging he can smile and say good morning to me as usual - no hard feelings."

Reporter
"Have you changed your mind in re-filing?"

Trevor Vernon
"I will see if there is a reaction because if there is a rude reaction I won't re-file. But if they are civil about, maybe yeah - it depends."

Mike Rudon, Ch5
"You seem a lot less determine than when you first brought all the shillings in a pillow case. I know that you were on Facebook saying that this is it, you are kind of throwing the towel in where this is concern."

Trevor Vernon
"It's kind of rough when you get a knock on your door and I was in my "draws" and t-shirt taking care of my brother at home and a Marshall comes in and he wants to mark all your stuff. It's kind of a little wake up call."

Arthur Saldivar
"We want this ordeal to be over where he is concern. There is no reason why a personal attack should be made on him. So many people owes the court and owe the court for years without any writ of execution being levied against them. Much less a person who has paid. This is not a man who made a symbolic gesture of a payment of five dollars for a five thousand dollar judgment, but paid 50%. You see under those circumstances one could be move to other means and we wouldn't want that."

Jules Vasquez
"The way that it was done, that is was done in coins to make light of the fine or to make a clown of the individual receiving it - we are going to play smart and the individual say, oh you want to play smart? This is how you play smart."

Arthur Saldivar
"Some people are quick to take poor people's money without them seeing, but don't want to take it when they gave it."

And Saldivar is in his own coin predicament. He tried to pay attorney Rodwell Williams - who is the prime minister's attorney in coins. Williams was the PM's attorney in a defamation case - and in a default judgement the court ordered that Saldivar had to pay Williams's $9,500 in costs. He tried the same stunt last Tuesday at Barrow and Williams - except Williams did not accept payment. He says Central Bank regulations prohibit the payment of debts above fifty dollars in coins. Saldivar rejected that today - using some austere comparisons:..

Arthur Saldivar
"All about that nonsense that the vampire that occupies that place on Regent Street - before he resides back to his coffin at night to sleep, dollar coins are capable of paying any debt. The legislation that he spoke of only addresses shillings and fifty cents and what was sent to him were dollar coins. Check the legislation section 22 of Central Bank act does not apply to dollar coins, so you can give him that one and present him with a stake, not the type that you eat."

Saldivar has until the end of July to pay the Prime Minister sixty thousand dollars for defamation, the largest award ever. He says he will appeal the court's order.
