Nurses Association Reason With Ministry
posted (June 3, 2014)
2 weeks ago, we told you about the complaints from the Nurses Association of Belize. They said that Health CEO Peter Allen had made a decision to transfer 9 senior nurses, which wasn't in the best interest of the nurses, or the provision of optimal healthcare services. Today, the Association got a chance to voice their concerns in a meeting with the Minister of Health, the CEO, and other senior health officials.

It took place in Belmopan, and it lasted for 2 hours. When the representatives of the association left the meeting an hour and a half ago, we got a chance to speak with the President. She told us that the Association made a good presentation to the Ministry as to why those nurses needed to remain where they are.

Laura Longsworth, President - Nurses Association of Belize
"We understand that it was certainly not only the responsibility of the CEO in terms of making those decisions, but it was a group of persons who sat with that and so I know we said that he was the one that made the decision but we are satisfied that we had persons who had input in that. Nevertheless we looked at the recommendations, we presented our position and we registered our strongest disapproval of the mass transfer of these nurses. What we did, we looked at each nurse and we decide their wonderful qualities, their contribution to the nursing service, their participation in quality improvement initiatives and even all of their support and participation in activities really took down neonatal, morbidity and mortality, so we feel like the whole process needs further consideration and the decision ended with us agreeing to meet in a week's time and they have agreed to take all of recommendations into consideration."

The president also said that the number of nurses who are being considered for transfer is 7 and not 9 as they were previously informed.
