Businessman/Landlord Charged For Rape, Denies Charges
posted (June 19, 2014)
For the past 2 nights, we've been telling you about the case of the businessman who has been under police scrutiny after a 19 year-old female accused him of abduction and rape. Well, tonight we can reveal that the man she's accusing is 65 year-old Adil Abdullah Bishop, a bail bondsman and landlord from Reggae Street.

He was arraigned today before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer, but no plea was taking from him because the offence is indictable. He was released on bail of $7,000, which he was able to meet.

After his hearing at the Magistrate's Court, Bishop was trying to avoid encounters with the press, but after he realized that the story of his arraignment would hit the news, he called the court reporters aside and granted a 1 one 1 interview with each of them. For context, we note that because he didn't grant the interview to us directly, there will be a few technical glitches. He told the freelance journalists that this young woman's accusation is nothing more than an attempt at blackmail and defamation:

Adil Abdullah Bishop
"This young lady text me and threatened me and tell me that if I don't give her $400 she will mess me up with the police. You see her text right there."

Roy Davis, reporter
"So Abdullah, that is the reason why she made that report that you raped her?"

Adil Abdullah Bishop
"Yes, that is the reason why she made that report, because I said that I will not give her any $400 to take her out of her man house because she told me that she wanted to move out because her man treats her very bad and she is not messing around with her man."

Roy Davis, reporter
"So you had dealings with this young lady for some time?"

Adil Abdullah Bishop
"Yes she had liked me for 6 months but she didn't want anybody to know."

Roy Davis, reporter
"I see. You want your side of the story to come out that you didn't......"

Adil Abdullah Bishop
"That I did not force myself with her and raped her."

Roy Davis, reporter
"And on that day when she said this thing happen, where were you?"

Adil Abdullah Bishop
"I was in Ladyville."

Roy Davis, reporter
"You were nowhere where she said this thing happened?"

Adil Abdullah Bishop
"That right."

Roy Davis, reporter
"And she sent you several texts messages?"

Adil Abdullah Bishop
"And that's what you see right here in front of you."

This evening, we spoke with the 19 year-old, and she denied the allegation that Bishop made that she knew him for several months and that she tried to blackmail him for $400. She tells us that the first time she actually spoke to this man was last week Thursday. She says that he's trying to twist the facts to try to accuse her of malicious intent. She says that the $400 she sent him text messages about was the price she was trying to bargain for rent for the supposed house he had available up at Mile 8 on the Western Highway. She says that he was asking for $600 per month, and she made a counter-offer of $400.

The investigators working on this case are under the command of Assistant Superintendent Chris Noble, and this evening, he granted an interview to the media. He explained about the progress they made on the case, all the way up until today when charges were brought against Bishop:

ASP Christopher Noble - Rural Executive Officer
"The female did make a report some days ago. We took her report and we looked into it. Based on the information we gathered, we ended up submitting that information for instructions. We got back those instructions and the gentleman has subsequently been charged. He is to my knowledge before the court this morning and that is a matter for the courts now to decide. The relevant information for that file is being put together so that we can put ot forward."

Daniel Ortiz
"We were made to understand that you guys had a bit of difficulty in the initial stages because the medical examination showed certain details. Can you speak to that?"

ASP Christopher Noble
"I really cannot because I cannot say that we had difficulty. It's only information that was lacking from one standpoint of it, not that we can say as expert in any one area which is why we did consultation on it."

Daniel Ortiz
"Does it concern you the nature of this report because from what we gathered the sequence of events, it seems as though it was well or carefully plan in terms of trying to be disingenuous and destroy evidence and stuff like that."

ASP Christopher Noble
"Every person with criminal intent does not want to be caught, so persons with the information may tend to want to destroy things. However we cannot rule out that at every scene if you don't take something there, you leave something there. And that is exactly what happened in this case. And it happens in a lot of case where people believe that you've destroyed the evidence when in fact you may have left more than you thought you destroyed."

Bishop returns to court for this rape charge on August 5.

Our archives show that on March 13, 2000, Bishop was charged and arraigned for Attempted Rape, Grievous Harm, and Forcible Abduction. In that incident, he was accused of attacking a 15 year-old student from Excelsior High School. He was also accused making sexual advances toward the same young lady on August 19, 1999. He was not convicted for that allegation.
