KHMH Says It Is Not A Psychiatric Hospital In Wake Of 22 Year Old’s Death
posted (July 3, 2014)
Last night we told you about the drowning of 22-year-old Andrea Herbert. She was found in the Belize River under the Belchina Bridge at 9:00 on Wednesday morning. Police say there are no signs of foul play on her body.

But, it's not as cut and dry as that: Andrea Herbert was struggling with mental illness; her family says she suffered from an anxiety disorder and her mother had taken her to the KHMH to be medicated for it. After waiting in the emergency for two hours, she got impatient and walked out of the hospital, never to be seen alive by her family again.

Today, the KHMH sent out a less than sympathetic release saying, quote, "Ms. Herbert along with her mother came to our Accident and Emergency Department…and was triaged in a timely manner. The A and E staff were later informed by the patient's mother that she had left…at which point we asked her mother to bring her back." End quote.

The release adds that quote, "psychiatric services are offered at the Cleopatra White and Port Loyola Clinics. The KHMH does not have a Psychiatric Service and normally only manages acute psychiatric emergencies."

According to the family, Herbert's state of mind on Tuesday night was just that, a psychiatric emergency.
