Hon. Hulse Will Settle Libel Suit With Belize Times
posted (July 3, 2014)
Today, the media interviewed Immigration Minister Godwin Hulse for 40 minutes outside the Chief Justice's Courtroom at the Supreme Court. Most of the questions were about Immigration matters, but he was there was for a libel suit he's pursuing against the Belize Times. The defendant is Times Editor Alberto Vellos and his attorney Kareem Musa while Hulse has retained Michael Young. Today in the Chief Justice's Chambers, both sides agreed to an undisclosed settlement:..

Hon. Godwin Hulse
"We are working on trying to have a settlement, but on the 10th July at 10am there will be an open court statement. In the hurly burly of politics we respect the fact that there is going to be this mudslinging back and forth. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I understand it. It comes a point where you have to be careful and I think in this case that point was crossed and so I personally need to make sure that despite what the opposition or anybody may say that the reputation I have work so hard to maintain, which to this point is impeccable."

The recent precedent set in the Arthur Saldivar Case put the award for libel of an elected official at sixty thousand dollars.
