Learning Literacy Of The Money Kind
posted (July 7, 2014)
The Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship summer camps have been taking place since 2008. It's a collaboration between the Ministry of Education, Peacework and Pricewaterhouse Coopers - one of the world's leading accountancies. The idea for these six years has been to teach something you don't learn in school: how to make money, and how to manage it once you've made it. We found out more today at one of the five camp locations in Belize City:..

George Manousos, PWC
"This is day one of the three day camp. I've been going to every single classroom and its very energetic, the kids are really enthusiastic. I think we've broken the ice, PWC and the children of Belize are melding very well as expected."

Kelly Behrend, Director of Strategy and Innovation - Peacework
"The children are learning a variety of skills. First of all they are learning change agency, being an active member of your family, of your community and really of the world. They are learning global citizenship and about being responsible leaders and in the context of that leadership they are learning skills and financial literacy and entrepreneurship, how to create a business, manage a budget and really just meet their personal and professional goals."

"This workshop goes on for only two weeks?"

Kelly Behrend
"It's for 3 day camps each week, so we are just kicking off the first one right now and we will be repeating the same thing in 5 other schools next week for 3 day camp."

George Manousos, PWC
"For the secondary school kids we are teaching them about money; how to save, how to budget, how to become an entrepreneur if they want to start their own business, how to create a resume to interview and also teaching them interviewing techniques, so when they go in an interview, they'll have the proper skills to present the best way they can."

"We been this since 2008 and the program has grown since we began in 2008 from doing 4 schools then. We are up to 11 schools now and we have 300 students here."

Reporter
"In total, how many students is the program geared for?"

George Manousos, PWC
"I think we are the biggest school with 300 here, so I'll probably say we are probably serving over 2,000 people this week."

This camp session runs from July 7 - 9th at 5 city schools and is open to students in Standards 4, 5, 6 and Forms 1, 2 only.

The next session starts on July 14th.
