OW Residents Demand Charges For Cervantes Sr.
posted (July 8, 2014)
Today, Orange Walk residents again gathered outside of the Town Court House to see who will be charged for the abduction and murder of 71 year-old Ramon Cervantes Sr.

But, again, they waited in vain; no one was arraigned - no alleged perpetrators exposed. This afternoon, we spoke with one of the concerned residents about why she felt it important to keep watch. She says that she's doing it because the police need to know that they take Cervantes' murder very seriously, and they are demanding justice. She added that police need to release the identity of the alleged mastermind, a deportee who has reportedly absconded to Mexico:

Elizabeth Mejia Perez, Concerned Resident
"It's an innocent man they killed. They should have started to poster the man picture all over so that people can see how he looks, that's it."

Daniel Ortiz
"Ma'am I notice that there are so many people who have been here two days straight. They are standing in the sun hot, it was drizzling a little while ago - they are not moving. Why is it so important that the community of Orange Walk shows the public that they are in support of the Cervantes family?"

Elizabeth Mejia Perez, Concerned Resident
"It's because they killed an innocent person, a person who work hard for what he has and that is not fair. That's why we are all out here and we need justice about what happened because it could happen to anybody, it could happen to me, so come on northenos - let's come together."

And while Mejia-Perez wants the police to bring swift charges, this family member from Guinea Grass Village is demanding that police release 3 members of her family who they have detained. She tells us that the police continue to refuse to tell her why they are detained, but she suspects that it's in connection with Ramon Cervantes' murder. She adds that the police should have released them a long time ago because they are reportedly detained for more than 72 hours.

Police have given no indication when charges will be laid - and have not released the wanted poster for the mastermind which they had promised to send to us from Monday. We do have the name and photograph of the alleged suspect - a deportee who has allegedly fled to Mexico - but we cannot release it until police give the go ahead so as not to jeopardize the investigation.
