Court: Couple Threw Weed Out The Window
posted (July 8, 2014)
An ex-common-law couple, 39 year Jaime Pernillo and 42 year old Martha Alfaro, have to come up with $10,000 each after they were convicted of drug trafficking in the Magistrate's Court today.

The bust occurred on September 15, 2012. The ex- couple was traveling in a pick-up truck on the Burrell Boom /Hattieville Road when a police vehicle pulled up beside them and retrieved a bag containing the cannabis that was thrown out of the truck. The total weight of the drugs was 456 grams - or 1 pound.

Pernillo testified and denied that the cannabis belonged to him. Alfaro also testified and denied ownership of the cannabis. But the police officers who were in pursuit testified that they saw the bag of cannabis being thrown from the passenger side of the truck where Alfaro was. Pernillo said that he asked Alfaro where she got the cannabis from and she told him that she got it from the Belize Zoo.

After hearing all the evidence from the prosecution, Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer found them guilty of the offense. She sentenced them to pay a fine of$10,000. They were given until October 31 to pay, and if they default on payment they will serve 3 years.
