Scammer Used The Good Doctor’s Name
posted (July 11, 2014)
Tonight, police continue to detain a woman, who allegedly tried to run a scam by impersonating a well-known doctor from Belize Medical Associates.

It happened on Wednesday when Lee Mark Chang received a text message from someone claiming to be Dr. Victor Rosado. The person begged Chang for a 200-dollar donation to bring in a band from Mexico. The number seemed shady, so Chang called Rosado at his known number and he said the text didn't come from him.

So Chang set up a sting to catch the woman in the act - folder her to meet him at Chon Saan at 7:00 pm. Police were called in, and when she collected the money, she was picked up by police.

Today, Dr. Rosado told us that the public should be aware of scams like this because he dismissed the first 2 attempts which were made:

Dr. Victor Rosado - Scammers Impersonated Him
"About a month ago I received a phone call because this has been happening for some time now from someone just trying to verify my number if I had requested funds on behalf of an organization in this case it was the Holy Redeemer Marching Band. And at that time I told the person I had no knowledge of what they were talking about and when the person called back and we didn't answer the phone. I thought at that time that it was an isolated incident, however it has happen on two other occasions and this last occasion was 2 or 3 days ago when I was contacted by Mr. Li Mark asking if I had solicited funds on behalf of the Holy Redeemer Marching Band. Again I told him that I knew nothing of what he was talking about, but then I realize that the scammers were at it again. They were using my name soliciting funds on behalf of various organizations and so I had since reported it to the police and I placed an ad in the newspaper disclaiming that I had any association with these persons."

"I believe it is a crude form of identity theft because people are using my name soliciting funds and I had absolutely knowledge of this going on. There are also defrauding the organizations because people legitimately think that they are assisting an organization when in fact there are fraudsters using my name, using organizations to swindle people out of their money."

Today Dr. Rosado took out an advertisement in the Amandala to warn the public that scammers were impersonating him to solicit funds.

It is expected that this woman will be arrested, charged, and arraigned at the earliest convenience.
