ComPol Discuss His Officers, Whose Names Were Called In Cervantes Investigation
posted (July 16, 2014)

And one other matter that the press took the opportunity to ask the Commissioner about was the Cervantes Investigation.

All through the inquiry into the murder of 71 year-old Ramon Cervantes, we’ve been hearing reports of police officers who may have been implicated in his abduction, torture, and killing. Still no police officer has been charged, even though members of the Orange Walk community have been demanding it.

We asked the Police Commissioner about the links that the officers in question reportedly have to the case. Here’s how he responded:

Reporter
"Mr. Cervantes was on the media sharing his own concerns with the pace of the investigation as well as the fact he had to go beyond normal means to be able to get charges read, but the main question I have to ask is his concern regarding 2 police officers that were detained, what information do you have, because even the general population is saying that these are officers of the state, involved, brought in for questioning  of the handcuffs, what information do you have clarifying to the release of these two officers."

Allen Whylie - Commissioner of Police
"Well I haven't heard the concern of Ms. Cervantes, but I have been kept up to speed in terms of the investigation. I do know that two officers as a result of the investigations names were called. It’s an active investigation. I cannot identify those officers, I can tell you that what we have to date was shared with the DPP and they instructed us what charges to lay and against who and so the investigation is ongoing and we are also looking at the issue of discipline but I will not say more than that, a life was lost, condolences to the family, just like other families who have lost lives through violence, condolences, but the police will do the investigation as thoroughly as possible and we cannot allow a motion be from the family member or the public to have us accelerating on doing things the wrong way."

Daniel Ortiz
"Are you able to disclose at this time, I don't know if it is a matter for us at this time due to the investigation but are you able to confirm for us if indeed that the handcuff that was supposedly retrieved is connected to the department?"

Allen Whylie - Commissioner of Police
"I will not confirm that at this time, as I said the investigation is ongoing."
