Ariel Rosado Foundation Awarded 30 Scholarships
posted (July 16, 2014)

Today, the Ariel Rosado Memorial Education Foundation celebrated its 3rd annual awards ceremony. When it was launched in 2011, 14 scholarships were issued, but today that number more than doubled to 30 scholarships in total: 10 for primary school, 7 for high school and 3 for Galen University. We spoke to Dr. Alvaro Rosado who told us more about the foundation:

Dr. Alvaro Rosado
"The foundation now expects to plateau off at 30 scholarships a year and we will be exerting our efforts and energy and whatever other resources we have in the establishment of a resource centre where students can come in, have access to computers, the internet, while their being supervised in study sessions."

"Will you say that the foundation is meeting its objectives and goals and is that attracting more sponsors?"

Dr. Alvaro Rosado
"We certainly are, as a matter of fact, just yesterday we manage to get another dedicated scholarship so our decision to plateau might not very well hold because we might get more sponsors that will have to give more scholarships but we certainly are attracting more attention now from the sponsors and we appreciate it, we want to thank them all, if it wasn't for the sponsors we wouldn't be here."

Reporter
"Why is a scholarship programme the best way to remember him?"

Dr. Alvaro Rosado
"Well Ariel was always a kind hearted person, he always wanted to do scholarships, as a matter of fact his stomping ground was on the Southside of Belize, and he had most of his friends there, and his thing was to try and help people. My wife and I have always been helping people with scholarships, Ariel got into the same thing and he had expressed and interest in doing this once he was settled in his law practice, so we thought this was a fitting way to do it."

And while the foundation is celebrating its success, it has not come without some difficulty, and that is because foundation treasurer, Bruce Sanchez Sr. is refusing to sign the checks. According to Dr. Alvaro Rosado, there are differences in opinion on how the money should be used. He did not tell exactly what those differences were, but he did provide some insight into their internal problems. We’ll have that part of the interview for you tomorrow, and we hope to get a chance to speak with Bruce Sanches Sr.
