posted (August 5, 2014)
There was a fire on Sunday in the Lake Independence Area on Sunday. It happened in the Peter Seco and Partridge Street area. Courtney Weatherburne found out more:

It was a depressing scene at the residence of 50 year old Charles Herbert, from the blackened remnants of his home appliances and tools scattered around his yard to the charred windows - reminders of the mishap that destroyed his home. Herbert told us what happened.

Charles Herbert, Fire Victim
"Last week Sunday I was at work and my neighbor call and told me that my house was on fire. When I reached home everything was burnt up."

Courtney Weatherburne
"What's the name of your neighbor?"

Charles Herbert, Fire Victim
"Mr. Hemsley."

Courtney Weatherburne
"When you came home what exactly did you observed?"

Charles Herbert, Fire Victim
"My house was burnt and my kids was out there. When I got inside everything was burnt up."

Courtney Weatherburne
"No one was inside the house when you came home?"

Charles Herbert, Fire Victim
"Nobody was inside."

Courtney Weatherburne
"You have your wife and kids or only you and the kids?"

Charles Herbert, Fire Victim
"My girl and my kids. They were baking and the fire got out of hand."

His girlfriend, Indira Banks was baking bread and bun on the fire hearth beneath his house. The fire got out of control, rose and set the house on fire. The smoke alerted his neighbor, and he called Herbert:

Neighbor
"When I push open my door I saw the house on fire, the smoke coming from the downstairs and from there it explode to the back, so I got on my phone and I call 911, but it was busy and so I call his phone and he told me that he is at work - he coming down."

Courtney Weatherburne
"How would you describe the response from the fire department and the police, was it quick response?"

Neighbor
"Yeah, it was a quick response. If they had took around the long way it could have been worse. They took it through shortcut here by WASA and they did a good job."

Herbert lost $6000 dollars in the fire.
