Remembering Chryslin
posted (August 6, 2014)

All week we have been reporting on the tragic murder of 16 year old Chryslin Gladden, and this evening, her close friends and family honoured her memory and publicly mourned her loss with a candlelight vigil and procession. It brought out hundreds of friends, family members, and supporters who marched in solidarity with a message of peace.  Robin Schaffer was there:…

"When we spoke to the supports, they say that all they want is peace."

Andrew Munnings - Spokesperson

"We are out there today as youths, as Belizeans to say that we have had enough of the crime and violence in Belize. As you can see this turn out is magnificent. Over 100 people, guys we did not expect this. First time youths have ever come together in Belize to say that we have had enough. And we have had the support of the business community and the adult community. Guys this is beautiful, this is magnificent, Chryslin live on, we love you Chryslin."

Christian Gough - Supporter

"Basically what all vigils should do and just send a message to those out there who would think to do something like this that you actually hurt people by committing acts like these. We're just here to support her family and to make a statement out here today."

Eslie May Patterson - Family Member

"I'm here to support the violence, I want the violence to stop. This is one of my family and I'm deeply hurt. So I'm participating to stop the violence."

Robin Schaffer

"So how did you feel when you found out about Chryslin''s murder?"

Family Member

"I feel very downhearted, I cried and cried because I didn't know it was my family."

Robin Schaffer

"Why are you out here today?"

Catherine Robinson - Supporter

"Because we want to stop the crime, we want to stop the violence, we're tired of this."

The vigil began at the Yabra Basketball Court, continued down Fairweather Street, Cemetery Road, Orange Street, and Albert Street before returning to the basketball court.
