Indira Mejia’s Troubles After Being Accused
posted (August 12, 2014)
Last night, we told you about Indira Mejia, the woman who was charged by police for being the alleged mastermind in an attempt on her husband's life.

We also made an error in that story when we showed you Jason "Soup" Williams. We were supposed to show 20 year-old Ignatius Williams who is charged for attempted murder, use of deadly means of harm and dangerous harm. Soup Williams is not charged for that or any offence related to this crime, and we apologize for that error.

Mejia has been granted bail, but because her common-law Husband, Brian Clare, is the victim of the shooting incident, and the virtual complainant, she has been ordered to stay away from him.

The problem is that all of her personal belongings are in the house that Clare owns, and Mejia has been having difficulty getting them out. She explained the problems she's been facing to us:

Indira Mejia
"I have my young baby and my daughter Steph in the house along with my personal clothing. My baby has her milk, special milk which cost $80 and I can't access that and her medications and I am trying to do things the right way. Yesterday I went to the family court get an order. I spoke to an intake officer and she told me that the court can't do anything for me - that I need to go to the domestic violence unit. So myself along with my attorney we went over there and they assisted me and they took me to the house. They call Mr. Clare and they told him that he had to come and open the house so I could get my clothing, my kids clothing. We went there and he refused to come. Later in the night along with the police from the domestic violence unit we went back there and he told us that we need to come back at 8 in the morning and then he will allow me to go in and get everything that's mine."

"We went this morning and he refused to come, so I came back to the court along with my attorney, I went before a magistrate and she basically told me that there is nothing in the law that can help me to get my personal belongings out of the house. All I want is my clothing. I don't have any clothing, this is somebody clothes I am using. The clothing I went with to court yesterday was what someone loan to me and I just need my documents and my kid's clothes and especially my young baby, her milk because she has some very serious medical conditions."

Daniel Ortiz
"What is publicizing this matter, what are you hoping to accomplish?"

Indira Mejia
"I am just hoping that someone out there can help me because it seems to me that the police can't do anything and the court can't do anything, so how will I get my stuff? How can I move along with my life? All I want is to get my clothing, my kids clothing and our documents out of that house and especially the baby's medication and her feed."

Because the case is before the court, Mejia told us that she couldn't answer any questions directly related to the allegations because it could prejudice her case. But she does strongly maintain her innocence. For context, we revisit yesterday's interview with the investigating officer from Precinct 2. We put those questions to him directly:

Sgt. Roberto Novelo, C.I.B., Precinct 2, Belize City Police
"So far police have arrested a guy, Ignatius Williams, 20 years of age. He has been charged for attempted murder, use of deadly means and grievous hard upon Mr. Brian Clare and also Ms. Indira Mejia has been charged for abetment to commit murder."

Reporter
"Sir, are you able to disclose on what basis the common-law-wife is being charged? How did you guys find out, was it a hit?"

Sgt. Roberto Novelo, C.I.B., Precinct 2, Belize City Police
"Our investigations reveal that Miss Indira Mejia planned to kill her common-law-husband. It appears that Miss Mejia wants to get rid of her common-law-husband for his property."

Reporter
"Sir, have you been able to establish that exactly because when we had spoken with her, she had said that there was already some documentation to show that all that would be left if anything happened to him, in the hands of his children, his other relatives but not her."

Sgt. Roberto Novelo
"Not necessarily. Based on our investigations so far, that is what the investigation reveals. She is the one who lured Mr. Brian Clare to that location where he was shot."

Reporter
"According to her she doesn't even know this young man that you charged with attempted murder. The first time she met him was in the police station, she told me this morning."

Sgt. Roberto Novelo
"As with any other case the suspects will have an alibi."

Reporter
"But you are sure that your case against her iron clad and you will prevail when the matter goes to trial?"

Sgt. Roberto Novelo
"Sure, the court will decide."

Mejia returns to court on September 12.
