Security Guard Killed…For His Gun?
posted (September 5, 2014)
This morning at around 7:30, A security guard was shot on Sibun Street in the area of the city known as "Bak-a-Town". By noon, he was dead from his injuries.

It's an unusual crime because, by all appearances, the victim, 21 year-old Corey Howard was a working man with no connections to any of the city gangs, the shooting defies known crime patterns.

Tonight, his family is grieving his loss, and they're trying to make sense of his violent end, which has all appearances of one of those street slayings we've seen so many times.

We spoke to police this afternoon, and to his family half hour before news time. Here's what they told us:

Rafael Martinez, Police Press Officer
"Approximately 7:40 this morning 21 year old security guard Corey Douglas Howard of a Belize City address was shot multiple time on Sibun Street while on his way to work. He was admitted to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital undergoing surgery, but unfortunately he succumb to his injuries at 12:40 this afternoon. We want to send our sincere condolences to the family. Police have since recovered 6 expended 9mm shells from the scene and the investigation continues. At this time nobody has been detained and we cannot ascertain a motive for this senseless shooting."

Leon Howard, brother of the Deceased
"He was going to work, he was in uniform actually. Actually I found out that it happen two blocks away from his work place, KBH."

Daniel Ortiz
"Tell us what you know happen in terms what was his injuries, what happen on the scene?"

Leon Howard, brother of the Deceased
"I wants on the scene, but what I have gathered the shooting - it was multiple shots over his entire body. I guess the fatal one was the one to his neck and the one to his lower back. The bullet damage to his organs, the doctor told us. My brother was a peaceful, always laughing, joking, but for violent wise he was not a gang person. He was not in a gang to that matter, so it was rally shocking to the family to this to take place."

Daniel Ortiz
"How is the family processing this at this time, the sudden demise in such a terrible fashion?"

Leon Howard, brother of the Deceased
"Presently we just have to stay with each other and be strong until further notice."

Howard started working for KBH Security about 3 months ago, and he is the father of a 3 year-old daughter. We understand that he was walking to work to go pick up the radio and other equipment he uses on the job. He was a stone's throw away from the KBH headquarters when he was gunned down.

As we've told you, his murder is puzzling because there is no clear motive, yet, his assailant or assailants shot him 7 times. Police sources tell us that they may have targeted him in an attempt to get his licensed weapon which belongs to KBH.
