Cleyon Needs Your Help
posted (September 25, 2014)
Tonight, the family of 10 year-old Cleyon Marage is under intense pressure to try to come up with hundreds of thousands of dollars for his medical treatment because he has been diagnosed with leukemia.

Cleyon's version of the blood cancer is called acute myeloid leukemia, and seen here, it starts in the bone marrow. This is where the body produces white blood cells for the body's immune system to fight off diseases and red blood cells for transportation of nutrients and waste. In little Cleyon's case, the cancer interferes with the bone marrow's production of blood cells, and produces cancer cells instead.

Cleyon needs emergency treatment because his condition is worsening and it has a high mortality rate. Today, his mother visited our office to implore you to help her raise money for his treatment. Here's what she told us.

Clovis Matura, Mother
"He was diagnosed in April at Karl Heusner Hospital and we've been trying to get him help."

Daniel Ortiz
"What is the name of the disease?"

Clovis Matura, Mother
"Acute myeloid Leukemia."

Daniel Ortiz
"What have the doctors told you of the symptoms and the seriousness of this disease?"

Clovis Matura, Mother
"The doctors say that the symptoms will deteriorate him and eventually lead to death if he does not receive treatment soon."

Daniel Ortiz
"We understand that you are trying to ask the public for assistance to try to get him that help. How much does it cost you and where will he have to seek that treatment?"

Clovis Matura, Mother
"He can get treatment in Merida. To go to Merida, the chemotherapy will cost us BZ$4,000 for the month and he needs to receive treatment for at least 18 months. The doctor said that we also need to give him a bone marrow which they cannot provide in Merida. He said that he needs to go to the US for that. The doctor said that the bone marrow is US$200,000, but they cannot do it there in Merida. We are just really asking for the public to please help us because we really don't want to lose him."

If you would like to help Cleyon Marage, you can contact his family at 665-0190 or 661-3131, or at the email address clovismatura@gmail.com. Additionally, you can make a monetary donation to his Holy Redeemer Credit Union account number 52770.
