Cop Caught Red Handed With Stolen Jewellry
posted (October 1, 2014)

Tonight, our newscast is loaded with reports of police behaving lawlessly or abusing their authority while in the line of duty. There are 7 officers who are facing either disciplinary or criminal charges for 6 separate complaints to police.

There have been some outrageous reports made to us recently, but the next one really takes the cake: today, a police man searched a woman's house, allegedly stole her jewellery and was then caught with it red-handed!

Here's what happened: After the search, the woman quickly caught up on her missing jewellery, reacted in time, and called police. They, in turn, reacted quickly, and caught the officer in the act with the jewellery in his possession.

That constable is detained tonight pending charges.

The Officer Commanding Professional Standards Branch for the Belize District outlined it for us today:

ASP Glen Rivero - OC, Professional Standard Branch

"We continue our fight against corruption, against abuse of our citizen's constitutional right. I also want to update that there is a case the occurred today where we received an information from a young lady who claimed her house was searched and some jewellery went missing. That matter was pursued and the team that went to her house was immediately gathered. There were informed that none of the team members should leave. One of the member left and we pursued him and we ending up arresting him and a young lady with the jewellery. He will be charged for that he will also be charged for using a motorcycle not covered under third party risk insurance and not registered."

At this time, the police constable's charge sheets are being prepared, and he will be taken to court and arraigned at the earliest convenience. According to ASP Rivero, if he is convicted of this offence, after being given his day in court, he will be dismissed from the Department.
