Castro Says He’s Not Worried About Saldivar Replacement
posted (October 2, 2014)
The PUP has not yet found a replacement for Arthur Saldivar in Belize Rural North. But, the incumbent and two-term area representative Edmond Castro isn't worrying. He says that the area is a tall order for any newcomer candidate. He spoke to us about the political lay of the land yesterday:..

Hon. Edmund Castro, Area Rep - Bze Rural North
"It doesn't matter who they bring, but one thing I can tell you is that 26-27 villages spread out in Belize Rural North is not easy to cover in the short space of time that we have to go towards the general election. Its next to impossible."

Jules Vasquez
"So even if Arthur Saldivar is out of the picture honestly you think that you still have an advantage?"

Hon. Edmund Castro, Area Rep - Bze Rural North
"We will win."

Jules Vasquez
"But if they have a new candidate with an unblemished record, yes the villages are plenty but man you could do it if you work 7 days a week."

Hon. Edmund Castro, Area Rep - Bze Rural North
"Yes, but basically mathematically, do the math, how much days you have per village from now until the next election? No candidate who came within a year a change survives. Look at the UDP side and look at the PUP side, none of them fly-by-night will survive especially against an area representative that is always working and deliver for his people - suicidal."

Jules Vasquez
"But how do you take this interpretation; maybe you are putting in the work for them. Maybe some voters will say that they will vote for anybody other than Edmund."

Hon. Edmund Castro, Area Rep - Bze Rural North
"Well you always have that crowd, that's the reason why the opposition always gets some votes."

In other news relating to Castro, yesterday he told us about the Bi-national commission on transport where Mexican Federal Authorities told Belizean officials about a new requirement that all Belizean vehicles on Mexican highways must have Mexican insurance. Today the news from out of the meeting is that Belize has asked for a 5 year extra period to adapt to the new measure. This, we are told, is under consideration. It was also made clear that the coverage is required for tourism and public passengers but not for private transportation at this time. Bottom line, if you have your private vehicle, for the time being at least, you should be straight.
