Foreign Minister Elrington Was A Firebrand Too
posted (October 3, 2014)
That's pretty much the same thing that Foreign Minister Wilfred Elrington had to say when he caught up with him at another event. He added that while he must be measured on all controversial issues such as this, he was once a firebrand who participated in many protests in his youth:

Reporter "There was protest this morning in front of the Guatemalan Embassy. Some Belizeans....

Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"Nobody use to protest more than me you know."

Reporter
"Do you believe that this many hinder this wonderful relationship...."

Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"It's not going to hinder it. I use to do worse than that when I was younger."

Reporter
"What do you have to say to those protesters?"

Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"That is democracy. People do that all over the world. People have the right to express their views. I was once arrested for doing the same thing you know."

Reporter
"Do you condone it?"

Hon. Wilfred Elrington, Minister of Foreign Affairs
"I don't condone it, but people have a right to do it. That is our right. You don't think they should do it? I don't condone it. If the police catch them, they police caught me and arrested me and charged me and I was convicted, but people do these kinds of things - that's what you do in a democracy."
