Miss Belize Preparing for Miss Universe
posted (April 27, 2005)

"This year will be the year!," it's a declaration of hope that we've heard every year since 1979 when Sarita Acosta placed in the top twelve in the Miss Universe Pageant. That was almost three full decades ago, but the buzz is building about Miss Belize Andrea Elrington. She will represent Belize in the Miss Universe Pageant next month in Bangkok, Thailand. Presently, she is in Belize on a whirlwind fund raising trip and stopped by our studios. Andrea says that apart from 85 other girls there is only one thing keeping her from the crown and that's why she's here; she says she neds your help.

Andrea Elrington, Miss Belize 2005
"I have been given much moral support, much appreciated moral support, from my Belizean community as well as from the community abroad in the international community. I am very pleased with that. I am very enthusiastic about what is going to happen in Thailand. The only problem right now is that I need the financial support in order to take me there. Going to Thailand takes a lot. It takes a lot physically, it takes a lot emotionally, and especially going to a different continent altogether takes a lot financially. So far we're not there yet. I am not at the point where I can be certain that I can get on a plane next week and go represent Belize well. So I really need the Belizean public to come out and support me in whichever way they can. Every little bit is going to help this time around."

Keith Swift,
Why should sending a queen to Thailand matter to us? Why should we care?

Andrea Elrington,
"Well first and foremost, going to Thailand, going to the Miss Universe pageant, is not just about being a beauty queen anymore. It takes a lot more, a complete woman, to be able to compete on such a large scale. Not only that but we are in tying times, I agree. Belize is under a lot of pressure, challenging times, and you know Belize can always rise to the occasion, we've always met our challenges. This is a great opportunity for Belize put a good foot forward, to do something positive, especially on the international arena right now; everybody is looking at Belize. Everybody is looking for Belize this time around. This time we are not going just as a candidate or a delegate, we are going as a contender for the title. Belizeans need to realize that eventhough we are not in the best of times, we need to come out and put our best foot forward and support something that is positive."

Andrea will be at the Lions Club in Belmopan tonight. There will be an all-day telethon on LOVE FM tomorrow and there will be a Miss Belize Universe mixer at the Putt Putt lounge tomorrow.
