Major Drainage Project For City
posted (October 6, 2014)
In all the major road works in the city - one major intersection has been left untouched. That's Cinderella Plaza which connects a cluster of heavily trafficked paved roads - but remains rough and unpaved. And that's because it has been designated as a site for a drainage canal. That's been holding up the paving - for too long it seems.

But, finally today, a ceremony was held to signal the start of road and canal construction in the area. Mayor Darrell Bradley discussed the scope of the project and how it will enhance climate resilience in Belize City.

Darrell Bradley, Mayor, Belize City
"It will going to be very extensive. As I mentioned, it will involve primarily the construction and the clearing of the Douglas Jones Canal. That will not require the digging up of the street. They are going to connect that canal under Freetown Road, the area of Freetown Road that is at the intersection, and then it's going to go through Cinderella Plaza here, and then it's going to go on the section of Baymen Avenue that we haven't completed and then it's going to go out Calle Al Mar and out to the Caribbean Sea. And this is why we haven't finished these areas of infrastructure. People always call in on the radio stations and say well you've done the first part of Kelly Street and the other part, you've done a section of Wilson Street, you've done a section of Baymen Avenue - why haven't you finished it? We haven't finished it because we were waiting on this project, and when this project finishes, then all of those areas will be enhanced and then we plan on doing a park area around Cinderella Plaza. I think that we need to really address the issue of climate change and drainage full force. I am very pleased that this is a 20 million dollar project which will see the upgrading of several canals. That's going to be a significant improvement in the quality of draining in very vulnerable areas of Belize City particularly in the Belama Phase 3 and 4 and then in this area of Cinderella Plaza."

The project should be completed in 8 to 10 months.
