Weed Bust: Man Pleads Guilty But 9 Still Jointly Charged
posted (November 3, 2014)
Tonight, 9 Belize City residents are facing drug trafficking charges after police seized marijuana, which was found at a house where they were all hanging out.

Acting on intelligence, Police visited Arthur Smith's Victoria Street residence on Saturday where they found 81.6 grams - or 2.87 ounces - of marijuana. Present at the time of the search were 65 year old Arthur Smith, 19 year old Tarique Grant, 28 year old Patricia Grant, 19 year old Aaron Cruz,20 year old Michael Graham, 22 year old Jason Gentle, 51 year old Austin Grant and 32 year old Steve Lucas, and a 15 year-old boy.

Because of the discovery, 9 nine persons were charged with drug trafficking, and they were all arraigned before Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer today. Arthur Smith wanted to accept guilt explaining that he had the drugs, not for sale, but as pain relief for his injured spinal chord. The police prosecutor refused to accept that plea explaining to the court that only the DPP's Office can make such a call. He added that he would have to consult with the DPP to accept such a plea since the deviation of the penalty between drug trafficking and drug possession is large.

Senior Magistrate Frazer was forced to enter Smith into an equivocal not-guilty plea, and she granted them all bail of $3,000. They must return on December 19.
