Tomorrow is Garifuna Settlement day and today the Central American Integration system, known as SICA held a timely meeting in Belize to discuss a food security project to be implemented among Garifuna communities in Central America namely Belize, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
It's called the "revitalization of the form of production and promotion of local agro-industry for food security of the Garifuna people of Central America." President of the National Garifuna Council in Belmopan, Sandra Miranda told us how this project will promote the richness of the culture as well as contribute to poverty alleviation among these communities.

"This is a food security project in the Garifuna communities of the territory, so it's not only Belize. We are just lucky that the launch is happening in Belize and today which is so significant to us Garifuna in Belize. Our project from Belize is a cassava project, but it is not limited to cassava, so others like maybe Honduras might do something else. But I understand they want to do cassava too, but from the displays you are seeing, that there are different items, so we can get into chips and you can do the different varieties in cassava; the byproducts. So that's the essence of our project. Part of the project covers marketing, training, so that if there is sustainability."
The project aims to help farmers and at least 30 families in communities like Hopkins, Seine Bight, Punta Gorda and Dangriga. The cost of the project is $ 160,450 USD dollars. It spans over a 12 month period.
