Smuggling Cubanos
posted (December 1, 2014)
Tonight, 2 Belizean residents are out on bail after being taken to court for trying to hide 2 Cuban Nationals who had entered the country illegally.

According to the Immigration Department, they detained 29 year-old Jolkies Guerra and 27 year-old Jaima Aldana who were in a Toyota Corolla car. Under questioning, the Cubans confessed to the officers that they entered Belize illegally through the banks of the Mopan River out west.

They then got into the vehicle arranged for them by 2 facilitators. After conducting their investigation, the Immigration Officers accused 50 year-old Belizean mechanic Lewellyn Ramclam and 49 year-old Cuban national Alberto Quintana, who has permanent resident status here.

Guerra and Aldana were charged with illegal entry while Ramclam and Quintana were charged with 2 counts of aiding a person to remain in Belize illegally. All 4 defendants were arraigned today and Guerra and Aldana pleaded guilty to the offence. Senior Magistrate Sharon Frazer sentenced to them to pay a fine of $1,000 forthwith. If they don't pay the fine, they will have to serve 6 months in jail, and after paying the fine or serving the jail sentence, they will be deported to Cuba.

Ramclam and Quintana were both offered bail of $1,000 after they pleaded not guilty to the charges. They must return to court on January 27, 2015.
