Belize Waste Control and Belize Maintenance Limited – those are the two private companies that (sort of) keep the city clean – and, someday when the full story is told, that two headed sanitation monster and their prohibitive weekly fees – may play the starring role in the story of the undoing of Darrell Bradley.

You've already heard how hiring the BML workers is taking Mayor Bradley through a sort of dark night of the soul. Well, Waste Control is putting him through another set of trials. The company ahs been suing the council to collect their arrears- and at one point event threatened Mayor Bradley with a bench warrant for his arrest and imprisonment.

And then on Friday the company sent court officers to take re-possess his mayoral pickup – to settle unpaid arrears. They never did because the arrears had been paid that afternoon – but today the mayor said that there is indeed abiding bad blood on both sides:..

"The truth of the matter is I think that has something to do with the elections coming around this season. I think that has to do with the poor relationship we have with both sanitation contractors. Not withstanding that I have always maintained that the cost for sanitation services is too high and we will always be in problems with the sanitation contractors through litigation or some debt position but when we come into our high season we always pay them off."

"From what I understand they have filed suite for another amount, 620,000 dollars I believe."

"What happens on our legal council, Ms. Mckenzie together with Ms. Elrington together with myself, we're dealing with that situation. What did is duplicate the claim so they sued us at the earlier part of the year for 500,000 dollars and what they have us a rolling bill with us. We've entered an agreement with them that we're going to pay them off. They all always know we have a slow season and we'll be running to the arrears position, this is nothing new. What they did is they sued us again for an amount including the same amount."

"Why would something like that happen? Is it a legal glitch? Is it malice?"

Darrell Bradley

"I would suspect there is some animus between the company and myself and I think this is something i've had to deal with for the past 2 and a half years. There's no love lost between us and it is something I can admit. When they go on TV, they make certain statements, when I go on TV, likewise I make certain statements, it's not something i'm extremely proud of. So I do think there is some animosity there that has fuelled of some of this litigation."
