posted (December 11, 2014)
Last night when our newscast started, San Ignacio Police were processing the scene of a murder in Esperanza Village, just outside the Twin Towns.

24 year-old Samir Fernandez, a resident of Santa Elena, was found 3 miles away in a secluded area. There were signs that he had been clubbed in the head and left there to die. But, who would want to kill him and why? That's what Daniel Ortiz went to Esperanza Village to try to find out today. Here's his report:

Daniel Ortiz reporting
The body of 24 year-old Samir Fernandez was found here in this picado road just off this unpaved street in Esperanza Village. Based on police information they don't believe that he had been dead for an extended period of time before he was found. He had two injuries to the head, apparently inflicted by a blunt object.

The assailant then disposed of him in this secluded area.

Supt. Dinsdale Thompson - OC, San Ignacio
"What we have found is individuals who is lifeless and later on we found out that it is Samir Fernandez of San Pedro Street here in Santa Elena, a 24 year old laborer. Preliminary investigations is revealing that Samir indeed have received head injuries which we believe have caused him to succumb to those injuries. We have also detain 3 individuals who we believe can assist us in our investigation concerning this murder. At the present moment we are still interviewing some more people."

Police have been putting together a timeline to determine his whereabouts and companions up to the moment of his death.

Supt. Dinsdale Thompson - OC, San Ignacio
"Investigations have revealed so far that Samir, sometime 10am yesterday morning he was still alive and we have found out through some text that he had sent to a certain individual and those texts are saying are in connections to his movements that morning. So, with that we have already determine that Samir was still alive 10am yesterday morning. So, it is from 10am until yesterday evening, sometime around 4:30pm which we are linking and putting together what really did occur."

Orlando Fernando - Father of Deceased
"What I have learnt is that he was alive up to about midday and that what happen is that he was preparing to join the Coast Guard and he had taken an interview and was successful and I want to believe that he was to start training very soon. So, in the meantime he was doing other jobs and getting ready for that challenge."

The challenge that investigators are facing right now are the multiple angles and leads, and those include the different aspects of his personality.

Supt. Dinsdale Thompson - OC, San Ignacio
"Samir is no stranger to the San Ignacio police that I can say. Two days prior to his death he was in the police's custody here concerning an investigation that we were carrying out and he was released. To say whether or not he had any run-ins with other individuals as to might have led to his death, we are still following up some leads that we are looking at."

Orlando Fernando - Father of Deceased
"He had his brushes with the law and his cases went through the court system and he was never found guilty of any offence. So he has a clean record like you and me. Samir was a typical 24 year old. He was full of energy, very friendly, he loved music and he love his children. I think one of his strengths and weakness are that he was very generous and was very trusting in people and this included both persons of good character and bad character."

Daniel Ortiz
"Do you believe that one of those persons of had character may have lured him to his death yesterday?"

Orlando Fernando - Father of Deceased
"I suspect that is what might have happen. It's a traumatic situation, because unfortunately my father was buried two weeks ago and now we have this double tragedy. It's a very difficult time for the family."

Daniel Ortiz
"Does he have children? Is he a father?"

Orlando Fernando - Father of Deceased
"Yes he have two wonderful girls."

Daniel Ortiz "Talk to us, trying to comfort your grand kids at this moment. Have they been asking for their dad?"

Orlando Fernando - Father of Deceased
"I suspect they have, but I think that the news will be broken to them gently at the right time. I just want them to know that they have the full support of the family, of friends and that Samir would have wanted us and we will continue to support them and they have the full backing of the Fernandez and the Dawson families."

Apart from his 2 daughters, a 4 year-old and a 2 year-old, Fernandez leaves behind his common-law wife, his parents, 2 sisters and a brother.
