Benque Family Lost Everything In A Fire
posted (January 5, 2015)
The Can family in Benque lost everything in a New Year's Day fire. The family of 5 was in their home on 493 Elizabeth Street when they noticed smoke coming from one of the bedrooms after 1 in the afternoon.

With no time to collect their belongings, they raced outside barefooted. In a couple of minutes the fire spread to the entire house, destroying the wooden sections.

As you can see in this video, the firemen as well as many residents were frantically trying to put out the fire before it spread to the neighbor's house.

We spoke with 37 year old Ingrid Can over the phone on Friday and she says she does not know what caused the fire and that she is still waiting for an official report from the Fire department and the police. Ingrid says the cost of damage is about $75,000. Family members are assisting them at this time but if you would also like to assist you can call 660-8477. According to Ingrid, this is not the first time tragedy has hit her family at this time of year: her father passed away during Christmas of 2013. For the neighbors - the Vaca family, their windows, pipes and sections of the wooden ceiling were damaged in the blaze.
