Costa Ricans Learn About GREAT Program
posted (January 13, 2015)
Yesterday we told you about the training for the Gang Resistance Education and Training program, also known as GREAT.

Today a trio of senior representatives from Costa Rica was Belize to learn about the programme. That group includes the Vice Minister of Public Security Maria Elizondo.

Today the Costa Rican officials accompanied GREAT police coordinators to city schools to observe and assess the feasibility of the program being adopted in their country. According to the head of Community Policing Elroy Carcamo, this visit along with other evaluations speak volumes to the success of the GREAT program.

Sgt. Elroy Carcamo, Head of Community Policing
"Today we have three person from Costa Rica, from the ministerial level and one of them that deals with programs for youths. The idea is that they are looking at the GREAT program which we have here in Belize, seeing how best it will work for them in their country, looking at the challenges that we have and the benefits that we have had with it and see how they can implement that in their country. We had some international officers that came in to do a little write up on the program to check to see how the program was going and we were graded very well in Belize for being intimately involved in the program and with the few officers that we have, we try to touch base with a lot of schools. Hopefully, by the end of the year we get to a goal of over 100 officers."

The officials will be here for 2 days. They will also attend the training sessions at the Biltmore.
