Drainage Project Will Force Road Closures
posted (January 22, 2015)
Today the Ministry of Works saying that Newtown Barracks - the streets that leads to the Princess Ramada by the Mexican Institute would be closed for four weeks. It's part of the Ministry of Works Flood Mitigation project, where the Douglas Jones Canal will be extending from Freetown Road, unto Newton Barracks and into the sea.

But it turns out, that closing that street off four four weeks would cause chaos with the cruise season. Today we found out about their revised plans:..

Jose Divas - Technical Specialist
"As part of the flood mitigation scope of work, what we are doing is we extend the existing Douglas Jones canal from Freetown Road all the way pass Newtown Barracks into the sea. Right now the inconvenience is for residents on Calle del Mar is that we are excavating and constructing a canal on the left hand side as you can see here. So, the access is limited and we have approached the residents and ask them for their cooperation. Further to that, the inconvenience that will be experience is at the junction of Freetown Road and on Cinderella Plaza, we will have to close that temporarily. We haven't schedule that date yet, but when we do, we will inform the public. Furthermore to the press release that was sent earlier, a petition was sent to the contractor from tourism, that they are in the peak right now, we will not be closing Newtown Barracks Road anymore and we will leave it to a later date when tourism is not at its highest peak again. The purpose of the canal is to alleviate flooding that is concentrated right now by the Baymen Avenue area. It should create a better flow and a part from the extension of the canal, we are also cleaning and rehabilitating the existing Douglas Jones canal under the street."

At some point eh very busy junction at Douglas Jones will be have to closed down - but they will advise on that in due course.
