Forger Asks Court For Leniency; He Wants To Be A Lawyer
posted (January 27, 2015)
25 year-old Kenroy Young, who is already serving prison time is spending the first night of an additional 5 year prison sentence for forgery related offences. That's the sentence that Justice Adolph Lucas gave him after considering his guilty plea, and his mitigation plea for a lesser sentence, declaring his wish to study law after being released.

Young was charged with 19 counts of uttering upon a false documents dating back from November 5 to November 13 of 2008. When his case was called up for trial last week Wednesday, he pleaded guilty to 5 of the 19 counts and asked the court to forgo a trial. The rest were then withdrawn by the prosecutor, Crown Counsel Portia Staine, on the premise that the other counts are in relation to the same sums of money which he stole, $15,750.

According to the prosecution's case, between November 5 and 13th, Young cashed 5 cheques from Regent Insurance Company for $15,750 dollars. Young, who was a United Nations Ambassador to Belize, says that he got hold of the cheques when he went to Regent Insurance Company Limited for a meeting.

In his mitigation hearing yesterday, Young, who is the holder of a bachelor's degree, gave prepared remarks telling the court that he intends to pursue a career as an attorney when he is released from prison. He asked for a lighter sentence due to this. Explaining the criminal behavior he now stands convicted of, Young told the court that when he was 18, he developed a gambling habit, which led to his downward spiral. He added that he comes from a prominent family, and he has broken his family's code not to lie, deceive or steal.

He didn't offer any character witnesses, and after a day for consideration, Justice Lucas handed him a sentence of 25 years - 5 for each count. But, he will only be spending a total of 4 more years in jail, in addition the amount he's already serving. That's because Justice Lucas subtracted 1 year from each of the 5 year sentences, and he ruled that the sentences will run concurrent to each other.

He's current serving a 7 year sentence for burglary and handling stolen goods, and so, when he finishes that sentence, he'll serve 4 more for these convictions.
