As we told you at the top of the newscast - Dr. Marco Tulio Mendez is awaiting a grim court date sometime this week - when he will become the first parliamentarian in memory to be charged for child abuse.
Last week, we showed you our interview with his wife, Dr. Lesly Mendez, who told us exclusively that the political operatives from both sides are targeting her and her family. She also revealed to us that her family has been facing this accusation against Dr. Marco Tulio for an entire years.
As we told you back in November he announced that he wasn't running for health reasons, and there is no evidence to suggest at this time that these allegations have any connection to that. But, the timing is very important because there is some suggestion from certain quarters that Dr. Lesly Mendez is the one pressing this issue to discredit him.
She made it clear last week Friday to us that the only stake she has in this is to protect her family and get to the truth:

"We've been separated for more than one year, so we do not really keep close contact. I know that he is in Belize, definitely he is not in Orange Walk. I don't know where he is."

"It's like a year. We've been separated for a year because of this issue. Because we've been trying to find answers, looking for professional help. Sadly, in our country, Belize, people have the brains just red and blue and that is very sad. I want to take this opportunity to ask the people to please be sensible, respectful. My duty as a mother, as a wife, is to look for the truth, for the correct answers and if there is someone that should be punish, they should be punish. But I cannot tell you yes, my husband did this, my husband did that."
Of important note is that Dr. Lesly Mendez and Dr. Marco Tulio Mendez are separated - because of this matter.
And in relation to the reports that the DPP was the one holding up the charges being laid against Dr. Mendez, she told us a few minutes ago via text, quote, "No one from the police department has contacted me officially or unofficially." End quote.
And while the police feel that they can choose whether to consult or not, the commissioner would be well advised to remember that constitutionally I have the power to take over any prosecution that he commences and deal with it as I see fit." END quote.
