Woman Died In Corozal Accident

2 nights ago on, our headline story was the fatal traffic accident, which claimed the lives of 2 men in Belmopan. Well, tonight, we report on an accident near the Corozal Border which claimed the life of a 23 year-old woman – and it could have been a mass casualty.

It happened at miles 85 and 86 on the Phillip Goldson Highway. 23 year-old Iris Mabel Chicas, a resident of San Roman Village, was driving her 28 year-old boyfriend in a Ford Fusion. From what police have been able to establish, she made an attempt to overtake a van on a curve.

A Toyota Tundra was coming in the opposite direction, with 6 persons inside.

Today, Corozal Police told the media that Chicas lost control, hit the van, and then ended up being stuck in the lane of the oncoming, which caused a head on collision:

"Corozal police visited an area between miles 85 and 86 where on arrival they saw the lifeless body of a female, who was lated identified as Iris Chicas. Her body was on the left hand side when heading towards the direction of the border. Also on the scene they observed 3 vehicles. Namely a car, with license plate 04777. A pickup, with license plate 20007 and minivan with taxi license plate 00471. The initial information we have indicated that the minivan, driven at the time by one Mr. Amilio Suller. HE was en route to the border when a pickup coming in the opposite direction, at the time driven by one Chaki Karam Edin. Behind this minivan, en route to the border, was the said car, 04777, which apparently was in the overtaking mode. As a result, the car made contact with the minivan, which caused it to go into the path of the incoming pickup in a head on motion. As a result, unfortunately, the female Chicas body apparently flung out of the moving vehicle."

As you heard in the interview, Iris Chicas was flung from the vehicle as a result of the collision, and it is believed that she died on impact. The 6 persons from the Tundra received varying degrees of the injuries and 2 persons had to be transported to the KHMH along with Chicas' boyfriend.
