UDP Outnumbered PUP In Corozal
posted (February 11, 2015)

At the top, we showed you how both the PUP and the UDP looked in Belize City for Nomination Day.

And while the UDP easily won the numbers game in Belize City, how did they do in the districts? Our news team went north to both Orange Walk and Corozal Town.

In Corozal town, PUP Mayoral Candidate, David "Dido" Vega, told us that even though UDP Incumbent Hilberto Campos has won 3 consecutive elections in the past, he is confident that Corozal will go blue this time:

David "Dido" Vega - PUP Mayoral Candidate

"I think the people of Corozal town are ready for the change. We're tired of victimisation, we're tired of not getting quality for what we deserve. I think we need to en power the people. This thing about UDP being first, Belizeans second and PUP last has to stop. I have here my daughter Kelsey, she is one of my biggest inspirations for getting into politics. I want a Corozal town that will have less crime, better parks, better centres. I want the people to know we can do better. There's a time for politics, there's a time for flags but after the 4th of March we need to work for everyone. That is what inspires me the most. I am confident that on the 4th of March, the people will come out in numbers, the will come out strong and they will vote for Dido on the slate."

We estimate generously that Vega only had 150 supporters

And in the afternoon, Hilberto Campos and the UDP brought out the numbers to show why he's won for 3 terms already. We were there also when it was his turn to be officially nominated. Here's how that looked:

The afternoon was all about the UDP 7 and their ability to flex in Corozal Town. At 2 pm sharp, Incumbent Mayor Hilberto Campos arrived at the nomination area with the rest of his team. Each candidate took their turns to formally accept their nomination for elected office.

As soon as that process was completed, the UDP 7 was immediately swept away by their home crowd.

Mayoral Candidate Campos only had a few minutes to spare for an interview. He's served 3 terms as mayor. A fourth term is a rarity in politics – but Campos is confident:

Mayor Hilberto Campos - Incumbent Mayoral Candidate

"Like my song the say, we're ready and everybody in Corozal is ready. You can call elections right now, you can call elections tomorrow, it doesn't make a difference, we're going to win and we're going to win big in Corozal. The people are not willing to change the administration of the UDP government, not a the local or central government."

"What is new this time? What is new this time your plan for the residence?"

Mayor Hilberto Campos

"I have told the people of Corozal for 3 consecutive terms, 9 years and I'm honoured if they give me the opportunity to continue serving. Over the last 3 years it has been an explosion of infrastructural projects here in Corozal. That is merely the beginning, the transformation is just starting here in Corozal, wait until 2015 when we get re-elected, the transformation will continue. There are so much big things coming for Corozal both at central government and local government."

Daniel Ortiz

"Given that you have already served for 3 terms, a 4th terms some persons may be saying would be difficult because that time it is perceived that you may have not done something for somebody or you may have pissed off some voter. Is that a worry for you that, you know what I go with a clear mind, the people of Corozal will still vote?"

Mayor Hilberto Campos

"That is clearly your opinion. I personally have been elected 3 consecutive times and let me give you something to go research, every time I was elected by a bigger margin. At the polls, the popularity continue growing. This year we're going to win by even more votes. It's not about Hilberto Campos, it's about the service that the UDP have been giving the people or Corozal."

And at the end of those comments he took his place in the motorcade for a procession around the town

We counted about 700 supporters, but we were told that others joined the motorcade at different points while it was moving.
