How The Municipals Will Determine the Political Landscape
posted (February 17, 2015)
In two weeks and a day - a little over one hundred thousand voters in nine municipalities will be able to go to the polls to select new mayors and councilors. But what will make voters decide one way or the other who to vote for? Well, that's the "known-unknown" that keeps politicians up at night - and they do their best to minimize that X factor. Most of the time that means trying to convince themselves that their own mantras are the gospel truth - and on election day, one of them will be proven right, either through political prescience or just plain dumb luck. But what are those mantras? We asked both mass party leaders on nomination day. The leader of the opposition said it's about the change, while the Prime Minister said it's about transformation:..

Hon. Francis Fonseca, Leader of the Opposition
"Everywhere we go and I think people are receptive. People want to be a part of this change. So, I really believe that the change will begin as I keep saying, it will begin on March 4th and will continue through to the general election. I really believe that people are concern about the direction the country is headed. I think they want to be a part of the change."

Hon. Dean Barrow, Prime Minister
"Throughout the country, people see what is happening. The infrastructural improvements, the physical transformation is in your face. You can't deny it and that is what I think is the biggest momentum booster if you will for the UDP."

In the 2012 election - voter turnout for the municipal vote was lowest in Belize City and Dangriga, which both showed 63% and highest in Benque Viejo and Orange Walk Town which showed 75% and 77%, respectively.
