posted (February 19, 2015)
Yesterday afternoon at around 1:30, 70 year old Marie Knowles was knocked down on Baghdad Street by an unlicensed driver. And tonight she is dead. The former school teacher was run over by a driver who - according to reports - was driving too fast, lost control, hit a parked car, and then swerved to the other side of the road, where he plowed down a fence, struck three water mains, and ran over Marie Knowles on the street sidewalk, who was only yards away from her home. After all that, the driver still hit another vehicle. She received extensive facial and body injuries and lost her life at around 3 this afternoon. Monica Bodden spoke to her daughter in law today:..

Amelita Knowles - Daughter-In-Law of Marie Knowles
"She was hit just like about 100 yards from home. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition and we lost her today."

Reporter
"Where was she heading to when the accident happened? It happened near your home?"

Amelita Knowles - Daughter-In-Law of Marie Knowles
"Yes, about 100 yards from home. She was coming back home. She went out and she was coming back home."

Reporter
"What do you know so far about the driver of the vehicle?"

Amelita Knowles - Daughter-In-Law of Marie Knowles
"We know that it was a very young drover who was driving recklessly and police have him in custody up to this time."

Reporter
"You mother-in-law, we understand that she has been an educator for many years. Can you tell us a little bit about her?"

Amelita Knowles - Daughter-In-Law of Marie Knowles
"She has been an educator for all her life, because up to this time of her death, she was to go to school that afternoon for 2 o' clock and she didn't make it to school. She taught at St. Mary's School in her early years and then at All Saints School. After retirement, the she was at the YWCA assisting at the Faber's Road back in that area."

Reporter
"The police gave you any indication that the person will be charged?"

Amelita Knowles - Daughter-In-Law of Marie Knowles
"They definitely did and they still have in in custody at this time."

Monica Bodden
"Could you tell us her age?"

Amelita Knowles - Daughter-In-Law of Marie Knowles
"She was 70 years old in last October. She is a very loving lady. Everybody knows her and as a loving person, she gave her all for family, for friends and that is what will keep us going. I know definitely she will be missed. Not a doubt she will be missed a whole lot."

Voice of: Neighbor
"All I know I recall I see the vehicle ran up into the fence and just slide over there and knock into the next one. That all I see and when I look after that, I saw the lady lying face down there."

Monica Bodden
"Was she moving?"

Voice of: Neighbor
"No, not really."

Monica Bodden
"It seemed that the vehicle came up all the way on the sidewalk, because I notice that your fence is broken."

Voice of: Neighbor
"Yes. It ran straight up into the fence and knock into the next vehicle, carry it middle of the street."

Monica Bodden
"I understand it your neighbor that got knocked down?"

Voice of: Neighbor
"Yes ma'am. It's a loving neighbor that he have, because she always stand up every afternoon and talk to us out here. She was already on the sidewalk already when she was knocked down. That's why we say that the vehicle turned that way and went straight and knocked her down."

Voice of: Neighbor
"I was out here sitting for a while and she passed me and went across the street. She was on the sidewalk when I walk in and by the time I walk out back, the vehicle had already hot our fence and I couldn't have come out, because it knocked me behind my foot a little bit and by the time I reach out, he crashed into another car and he ran from out his car and went across the street to see the lady. When I saw the person, it was a young person. I couldn't even believe that it was a young person, because the lady was a nice lady around our neighborhood. She doesn't mess around with friends, just us who are always on the sidewalk. And that day nobody wasn't really on the sidewalk, so I thanked God, but I think people supposed to look up to it because it's something bad and I am sorry about how the lady died, because she is not somebody bad or somebody who mess around with people."

Voice of: Neighbor
"When I saw her on the floor and then I put my hands over my mouth and I was like it's my neighbor that just got hit, that just talked to me not even 5 minutes ago and by the tie I reached outside, I see the person running towards her and all I could hear he say was the brakes was failing him at the moment - that's all I heard him say."

The 19-year-old driver whose name is Boyd Lopez was in an SUV owned by his boss at Maria Chang where he works as a warehouse attendant.

The 19 year old faces charges - which are likely now to include manslaughter and a litany of other offences. Police are considering whether they should charge his boss, a Chinese businessman for allowing someone to drive his vehicle without a license. The teenaged driver told police that the vehicle was stuck in gear and he couldn't control it. The vehicle is an automatic - so police doubt his story.
