No More Weeping For Cattlemen ‘Cause of Willows Bank
posted (February 20, 2015)
Flooding in the Belize River Valley is not just an emergency for rural residents - it's also a huge problem for their livestock, mainly cattle which have to be moved out of the area - but with rising water all around, where can they be taken to? It's a confounding problem which has resulted in major monetary losses for cattle ranchers. But now there's a solution. The Ministry of Agriculture in concert with the Global Climate Change Alliance and the European Union have set up a communal livestock holding facility. It's 50 acres of high, dry land in Willow's Bank and it can be used for 90 days in the year in flood or drought. IT was opened on Wednesday.

An official release says it will be open to all farmers for them to weigh, fatten, and sell their animals. All services provided through the facility are expected to have a minimum cost.

The initiative is part of a programme called, "Enhancing Belize's Resilience to Adapt to the Effects of Climate Change".
