The Wrath Of The Municipal Math Not Nice For PUP
posted (March 11, 2015)

And while everything is open for discussion, it is not clear how much is open for change. We've heard many complaints coming out of prominent PUP insiders after the election defeat – and right that they should. As we have reported, the numbers show that the defeat is massive.

A breakdown of the overall results, shows that in Belize City - in terms of percentage points - the UDP slate matched its 2006 and 2009 successes when the UDP was at the height of its popularity.

In Belmopan, the gain was the largest for the UDP, where the winning slate, shot up to a higher percentage of the vote than it had enjoyed in the last three elections – gaining 16 percentage points since 2012.

In Benque Viejo – the UDP did not match its 2009 high – but still gained on the 2012 result and ended up with 65% of the vote.

In Corozal, the UDP had the slightest gain – but it did still manage to elect Mayor Hilberto Campos for a fourth term.

In Dangriga, the winning UDP slate almost returned to its 2006 level, earning 60% of the vote.

In John Briceno's Orange Walk, the PUP slipped four percentage points but still managed to hold unto a majority of the seats on the town council.

In Punta Gorda, the UDP had its strongest showing in decades with 56% of the vote – while the PUP fell to a dismal 28% in a three way race.

In San Ignacio, the IDP matched its 2006 popularity with 64% of the vote – but could not get back to the 76% showing in 2009.

In San Pedro, the UDP increased its razor thin 2012 margin by five percentage points.

But perhaps most important is the overall national figure which shows the UDP exceeding its 2006 figures, and coming close to what it had in 2009.

Extremely bad news for the PUP because after 7 years in government, the polls should reflect that the UDP is losing popularity, not gaining.
