H.E. Nestor Mendez – Newly Elected Assistant Sec. Gen., OAS

"You know, I have been touched and humbled by all the expressions of support that have been forthcoming and really, I am very very grateful. I wasn't aware there was such a tremendous interest in these issues and I do have a lot of friends and I really appreciate so much messages of best wishes and prayers that I have received. In the last week, and today has especially been even more so. I am eternally grateful to everybody who has expressed some sort of best wishes. And i'm very happy and very pleased. We have several young officers in the ministry of foreign affairs and other ministries in the government of Belize who can see what we are doing and what can be done with the proper support. I'm hoping that will open some doors really."

Ambassador Mendez takes up the post of Assistant Secretary General at the end of July for a five year term. The Government of Belize will now have to name a new Permanent Representative to the OAS and Ambassador of Belize to the United States.
