Hon. Longsworth Will Endorse Tracy Taegar Panton
posted (March 24, 2015)
Last night we broke the news that CEO in the Ministry of Tourism Tracy Taegar-Panton would be offering herself as a candidate for the UDP in the Albert division. Initial reports suggested that she would face a convention against sitting representative Herman Longsworth, who is the Minister of State in the Ministry of Sports, and another challenger Phillip Willoughby.

Well, tonight, the news is that she won't face any convention: tomorrow she is expected to be endorsed by Longsworth and Willoughby at a UDP Press conference. It's a stunning turn of events in just a few days - to get a sitting representative and minister of state to step aside for someone who just a week ago was a high level technocrat in the Ministry of Tourism. But it seems that these days things are moving in hyper speed for the Barrow administration as it positions itself to go for what would be a historic third term - possibly in the first quarter of 2016.

But before we get to 2016, Taegar Panton's arrival on the political scene - literally out of the blue - we are told took shape in just a few days. It immediately makes the race in Albert compelling since the PUP candidate is Paul Thompson - who worked with Taegar-Panton at senior levels of the Mark Espat political machine between 1996 and 2005.

And while she has a solid professional background and political pedigree - on the ground, Tracy Taegar Panton is an unknown political quantity - and seasoned observers say she would have to go into a serious work mode in the division to catch up with Thompson who had his convention in December.

Now to the other part of the story: why would Longsworth and Willoughby just walk away? Everyone knows that in politics, just like Sunday dinner, no one leaves the table empty - and basic political logic tells us that they have been made promises of future appointments or arrangements to ease them along a graceful departure. We should know more tomorrow when the UDP holds a press conference to announce Taegar-Panton's arrival.
