I found out more from the family today. We warn you though that we did the interview at the family home - which is awash in blood - and if you are sensitive - you might want to take a five minute break for this story:..

It is behind this old cluttered chest of drawers that 42 year old Patrick Anthony Castillo hid his machete.

According to his family he has been sharpening his machete every day this week, telling them he was going to chop the yard, but he never did.

Instead, in a fit of rage, he attacked and killed his 20 year old step son Jose Jonathan Maderos.

A thick carpet of flesh and blood was spread across the upstairs veranda leading into the house.

"It happened around 9:30. My brother came from work and then afterwards he smashed my step sister's foot by mistake and then afterwards she went to tell her father. My niece was asleep, my brother daughter. She is 2 years old. She was asleep and so I brought her here and when I put her on the bed, I heard a loud noise and me and my sister-in-law, we went running upstairs and then we pushed the door, but the door came back close, then the door just open and my stepfather was just flinging a machete and the he cut me in my hand and I just saw my big brother with blood all over his face and he had a big cut to the neck and his ear was cut and his hair was chop and was falling and he was all cover with blood and in the living room was full of blood. I got 3 cuts and I went to the hospital and I got stiches and band aid."

But no band aid or gauze can be placed over the emotional wounds Jose's mother has to heal from now. Last night she was at work when she got the call:

(translated)"After 9 the paramedics called me and said Ms. Mauricio "Your common law husband killed your son." PAUSE 3 seconds!!! And I said "WHAT?" I didn't know what happened after because I fainted...I fainted on the ground of my work place."

"Sometimes he would beat my children, the smaller ones and my older son - ...he never liked my son because he was always defending his siblings and he would say..."don't, don't beat my little brothers or sisters and my common law husband has a daughter who was always causing problems."

And the problems kept on building up when her 14 year old step daughter came to the house this morning and attacked Jose's girlfriend.

"She came and told me it is because of me her father is in jail and I said "how will it be because of me...I didn't tell him to kill Jonathan and then I told her to shut up and she said no one will shut her up and she hit me in my face and scratched me here like she was crazy."

It is a crazy and horrific domestic incident indeed and it seems Castillo didn't want to face that reality.

"I saw him at the hospital like …he was cut at his wrists like after he killed my son he wanted to cut his veins and so they took him to the hospital and treated him and I went to his bed where they were treating him and I told him "you murdered my son"...and he only looked up and he said nothing."

Nothing. That is the emptiness Rosa feels inside her home now. Pictures and snapshots of a happy family are confined behind this blood stained glass frame; a misrepresentation of the chaos that has been brewing behind these walls.

In a broken and emotional state, Rosa described the fond memories of her son that will remain with her.

"He told me that no matter what he loves me that's why he never left me...he would tell me "I love you, you are my life…I would never leave you...I will always take care of you and when I die, I will die first because I don't want to see when you die. That's all I will remember that."
