The Troubles of 2005

You probably can't remember it now but 10 years ago – Belize had fallen off the map, or at least the communications grid – you couldn't make a phone call, send a text or an email or access the web: all communication domestic and international had been cut off. The entire national telecommunication system was down – a result of direct action by BTL employees who were in an uproar after a union employee had been fired. If the response of shutting down the whole communication grid seems a bit much – that is because it was the culmination of months of agitation against the Musa Administration – which was found out in 2004 for using public funds to pay private debts. And so, 2005 lurched from one crisis to another – but the biggest one was on March 15th when the phones went dead. Tonight, we dig into our archives to look back at that time when the government had to resort to special legislation to commandeer the phone company.
