Tablets, PUP Style
posted (April 23, 2015)
The Minister of Education had a big fanfare when he gave out tablets to University students a month ago. Well this afternoon, at the Hattieville Government School the PUP had their own tablet giaveway. It was an event of vastly different scale, but the idea is sound: technology is supposed to enhance the educational experience. The way that will be accomplished is by allowing the teachers access to a library of books on one portable device, instead of lugging around weighty texts books.

After the handing over ceremony, we spoke to the PUP representative about the origin of this donation, and we also asked the teachers about how the tablets will be put to use:

Hon. Dolores Balderamos-Garcia, Area Rep., Belize Rural Central
"Hattieville Government School is near and dear to my heart. And a kind donor who preferred to remain anonymous, donated 14 very good top quality tablets and I said to myself well how can we maximize this for Hattieville Government School. So naturally you're aware of the People's United Party position in relation for the use of technology for education. And so Mr. Yasser Musa and a few others suggested that we donated the tablets to the school, but in particular to the teachers. So that the teachers, as nation builders can share that technology. Now naturally we couldn't give a tablet for every student, but if they use it per classroom, basically the key for what donation is today, is what is on the flash drive. What is on the little magic device as I said. We believe very strongly in using the technology. So as you know our Party's position is the technology and the creativity, using them together. And I believe that with the creativity of the teachers, they will be able to share with the students. Now on that flash drive as I announced in the little ceremony, there are 500 books including, encyclopedias, including natural history, including science, including all kinds of things that are of interest to children."

Emom Neal, Teacher, Hattieville Government School
"The teachers, they can use the tablets in downloading programs and games to assist with their lesson. For example, I myself use technology every day in my classroom by downloading videos, songs, concepts, and with that the children learn better because they are entwined with their learning, they are more excited. It's not the paper and pen, so I believe the tablets will be an asset to our school because teachers they would like to bring their laptop but it's too heavy. So having the tablet here at school, we can just bring our flash drives with the materials and we can connect and let's go."
