86 Year Old Trapped In Fire
posted (April 28, 2015)
There was a fire in the city this afternoon. It happened at #17 Neal Pen Road around 3:30 this afternoon. But, it wasn't just the structure that was at risk, an 86-year-old woman was at home all alone - luckily neighbors were able to save her. The fire department was quick to the scene - and a neighbor told us off camera how she saved the octogenarian - we also spoke to the tenant downstairs about their damages:..

Voice of Neighbour
"I saw the smoke and I heard the lady crying. I went upstairs and tried to carry her down but I couldn't succeed so I called for someone and a young man came to help me, and that's how we brought her downstairs."

Courtney Weatherburne
"Was she the only one in the house at the time?"

Voice of Neighbour
"She was the only one at the time and she cannot move."

Nicholas Mogual, Tenant, downstairs
"The downstairs is supposed to be wet right now because when I went in there it was getting wet and there was a lot of smoke so I couldn't stay in there. But it's just getting wet for right now."

Courtney Weatherburne
"But nothing is burnt? You don't see anything damaged? Any of your belongings?"

Nicholas Mogual, Tenant, downstairs
"It's just water, it's just getting water damaged that's all. Only my TV and stuff will be spoiled."

Orin Smith, Station Officer
"On Tuesday the 28th of April 2015, at approximately 2:47pm. A call was received at the national fire service that a structural fire, #17 Neal's Pen Road address Belize City. On arrival on the scene, smoke and flame was seen coming out the south east section of the upper flat of a two-story wooden and concrete structure. Following a brief size up, the fire was later brought under control and extinguished. Preliminary investigation indicated the fire originated in a bedroom in the southeast corner of the building. The room of origin is definitely heavily gutted by the fire. The remainder of the house, particularly the north west section, sustained heavy smoke damage and some degree of heat damage as well as water damage."

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing and no cause has yet been identified.
