posted (May 18, 2015)
Another policeman has been caught trying to smuggle marijuana across the northern border.

This time, Constable Geian Ya - who is attached to the Corozal Quick Response Team was intercepted on Sunday afternoon at 1:55 by the Customs Enforcement Unit coming across the Santa Elena crossing from the Mexico side to Belize.

Ya was wearing his police camouflage trousers and a police t-shirt - but that didn't stop the Customs inspectors from checking his Hyundai Sonata which carried Texas license plates. The examining officer picked up the strong smell of marijuana and asked him to open the trunk. Inside he found a black plastic bag with three parcels of marijuana. Each compressed brick weighed just over a kilo to the total bust was about 7 pounds.

He was handed over to police who took him to Corozal Magistrate's court today and charged him for drug trafficking . He pleaded not guilty and was offered bail of three thousand dollars and his cause was adjourned until August.

He is the second police officer caught coming across the border with bricks of compressed marijuana in 6 months. Credible reports tells 7News that a clique of police officers have been enlisted to work in a cross border movement of marijuana which may originate out of the free zone. Ya was likely in the zone because he could not go over to Mexico in his camouflaged trousers.

Another police officer was also recently caught by customs smuggling four bags of Michael Kors products.
