Compol speaks On Cop Caught Smuggling Weed
posted (May 19, 2015)
Last night, we told you about Police Constable Geian Ya, the officer attached to the Corozal Quick Response Team who was caught trying to smuggle marijuana into the country. Well his boss, the Commissioner of Police, has told the press that he will be dealt with to the full extent of the law.

As we told you, Ya was intercepted at around 2 o'clock on Sunday afternoon by the Customs Enforcement Unit as he came across from Mexico, into Belize at the Santa Elena border. The examining officer picked up the strong scent of marijuana and asked him to open the trunk. Inside, the officer found a black plastic bag with 3 bricks of compressed marijuana to total weight of just under 7 pounds. Today the Commissioner of Police told us that Constable Ya has been dealt with to the full extent of the law:

Allen Whylie, Commissioner of Police
"I do know of the case. He was handed over to police. He has been arrested and charged. He has been taken to court. My understanding is that he was granted bail. He has been placed on interdiction by my office also. We, as administrators, we do not condone wrong doing within the Belize Police Department, be it of a criminal nature or be it a complaint from a citizen. It will be thoroughly investigated and once its substantiated, corrective actions will be taken. I cannot tell my officers what to do, because each individual is responsible for their own actions - their own conduct. But I can assure and the citizens that as long as wrong doing is brought to my notice and we can substantiate it, after it's investigated, it will be dealt with."

The Commissioner re-stated the much rehearsed platitude that every single complaint against police or report of criminal behavior is investigated thoroughly. Of course what he didn't address is that Ya is the second police officer in six months to be caught smuggling kilos of marijuana through the northern border. Strong information to 7News suggests that a clique of northern cops have been enlisted as couriers for smugglers who are based between Mexico and the Corozal free zone.
